Late night recruiting

Just wanted to pass this nugget on to you before I hit the sack. It looks like the first new recruit to come in under Washington State coach Mike Leach will be linebacker Patrick Ewing of Bellaire high school in Texas. According to Scout.com, Ewing had offers from Arizona, Arkansas and Houston, but chose WSU thanks to the stability coach Mike Leach brought to the Cougars.

“Coach Mike Leach has a contract for at least seven years,” Ewing told his hometown paper. “The coaching staff said I was the first on their list. I don’t have to worry about the head coach situation, like UH (Houston) or Arizona.”

He hasn’t even stepped foot on campus yet. If anyone was wondering what impact Leach and his staff might have on recruiting, and Texas specifically, well this looks like a hint that the Texas connection former coach Bill Doba sought might actually become reality under Leach, who has significant ties to the area after coaching at Texas Tech for a decade.

It’s nice to see WSU stealing recruits from SEC and Pac-12 teams instead of Big Sky schools for once.

Ewing’s official visit is in January — it may be a cold, rude awakening for the Texas native.
