Segregating children by gender

An Alabama public middle school has apparently been segregating children by gender involuntarily and without giving parents notification.

The American Civil Liberties Union has stepped in, warning the school that the practice is illegal and discriminatory.

Teaching girls and boys separately has risen as a national education topic in the past few years. Some schools that have opted to teach girls and boys separately have noted signs of academic improvement. The argument is that not only do boys and girls learn differently, but they can focus better without the distraction of the opposite sex in the classroom.

Those efforts, however, have been voluntary. In this case, Hanks Middle School students and parents were not given the choice.

While area schools, including private schools, integrate boys and girls, I wonder how people feel on the matter? If area schools offered classes or programs where girls and boys learned separately, would you be interested?

How much do teachers make?

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer ran a story on Sept. 11, 2008 about a teacher’s strike in Bellevue. As part of its report, the paper created a database that can be searched to find the annual salary of any teacher in Washington state.

This type of resource takes a tremendous amount of work and data collecting, and I thought local residents might find it useful. You can find the database here.
