What I do
I’m an education reporter for the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin. I’ve worked for the UB since Sept. 2006.
My beat includes covering the main school districts in our area: Walla Walla Public Schools, College Place Public Schools, Columbia (Burbank) School District, Milton-Freewater School District, and Athena-Weston School District. If you ever have questions on any of these schools please let me know. Our rural districts, including Waitsburg and Dayton, are covered by another reporter, Carrie Chicken.
My beat also includes covering the colleges (Walla Walla University, Whitman College, and Walla Walla Community College); the private schools, and any other education-related matters.
I’m the lead emergency services reporter, so my name may appear in the paper from time to time on articles about collisions, drug busts, arrests, etc.
And because I am bilingual in Spanish, I also occasionally cover diversity issues related to our Latino community.
The best way to reach me is e-mail, mariagonzalez@wwub.com. My work number is 509-526-8317. I’m also hoping in the future to spend an hour a week from a local cafe to meet with people who may want to talk directly about education issues.
