Money matters and college students
A college education doesn’t come cheap for many people, and students appear to be just as vulnerable – if not more so – to predatory lenders.
A business article in the LA Times today caught my attention, mainly because it could really be spun as an education story. A summary of the article: students take on [...]
Back to the 80s
If you could redo your high school prom, would you? Maybe you never got to go. Well now is your chance. The cheerleaders at Columbia High School in Burbank are hosting a “Back to the 80s” prom dance for grown-ups to coincide with Valentine’s Day. The fundraiser will feature dinner, 80s music, prom pictures, and [...]
Local kuddos to top educator pic
As an aside during last week’s board meeting, Walla Walla Public Schools Superintendent Rich Carter gave his support for Arne Duncan, who was picked by President-elect Barack Obama to be his U.S. Secretary of Education.
Duncan is superintendent and CEO of Chicago Public Schools. Carter said he is optimistic of the pick, and said Duncan and [...]
9:25 a.m. – school closure updates
Dixie and Prescott schools are the latest to cancel classes today, joining Walla Walla, College Place and Dayton schools in a last-minute decision to call off classes.

Snow day! — for some…

Walla Walla schools spokesman Mark Higgins let me know last night the decision [...]

Happy weekend everyone, and enjoy the snow! For most area school districts, this upcoming week marks the last week of classes before the Christmas holiday. But if the weather keeps up the way it has this morning, with a snow storm that appears to just be getting stronger, then there is a good chance classes [...]

The girl had apparently been driving her car to school with a sticker that contained an expletive. She was suspended for two days when she wouldn’t take it off, explained Brian Pickett with the National Coalition Against [...]
Bad news for morals
Apparently today’s youths are a bunch of cheating, lying, stealing opportunists. And as these teens are poised to become our future leaders, we need action now.
The report by the Josephson Institute in Los Angeles surveyed close to 30,000 high school students, with alarming numbers admitting to stealing from stores and parents in the last year, [...]
A boom for WWWCC
In what appears to be the extension of a national trend, enrollment at Walla Walla Community College is up by close to 9 percent from last year, surpassing the college’s expectations.
The trend appears to be closely related to economic woes, as people seek ways to save on college expenses, but also sharpen their skills in [...]
