After splitting their first two doubleheaders of the 2010 summer baseball season, the Walla Walla Bears suffered a pair of defeats to Yakima, 10-7 and 3-2, Saturday night at Walla Walla Community College’s Tausick Way field.
Losing the games was bad enough, but the fact that the Bears dropped them in the opponents’ final at-bat made the results even harder to swallow.
Walla Walla fell behind 5-0 after an inning-and-a-half of the opener before rallying to knot the score at 5, 6, and 7.
But the Beetles broke the latter tie with three runs in the seventh inning.
In game two, the Bears led 2-1 after one inning, but allowed an unearned run in the fifth and one more tally in the seventh as Yakima completed the sweep.
First-year coach Blaine Mercado said after Saturday’s setbacks that closing out games has been a concern in the early going. Hopefully, the Bears will get things figured out soon and have a successful 2010 campaign.
