Drew Heid shines during a clouded season

Gonzaga University’s baseball program has a new all-time leader for hits in a single season.
It’s been over three decades since Larry Patterson set the standard in that statistical category. He collected 91 hits in 1977.
On Sunday, former Touchet and Walla Walla Community College star Drew Heid stroked a fifth-inning RBI double in GU’s regular-season finale with visiting Portland – his 92nd hit of the campaign.
Also worthy of note in Sunday’s game was the scoreless ninth inning tossed by Jacob Hiatt, formerly of Wa-Hi and WWCC.
The highlights, unfortunately, came in a less-than-stellar 2010 for the Bulldogs. GU, which participated in the 2009 postseason, finished this year with an 8-13 record in the West Coast Conference and 20-36 overall after their 7-3 loss to the Pilots on Sunday.
But with that said, congrats nonetheless to Heid and Hiatt for ending their collegiate careers in positive fashion.
