Something special

There is something special going on at Walla Walla High School these days.

The Blue Devil girls basketball team improved its record in the Big Nine Conference’s Cascade Division to 9-1 and overall mark to 15-3 with a couple of victories over the weekend.

Wa-Hi smashed Eisenhower, 60-36, on Friday night and posted a 63-58 overtime triumph on Saturday at Hanford.

To fully appreciate what is making this campaign even more amazing requires a glance at this year’s roster – which is made up of two seniors, three juniors, four sophomores and a trio of freshmen.

Evidence that this team has matured was provided by 5-foot-10 sophomore forward/post Hope Klicker in the closing seconds of the Hanford contest. Klicker nailed a 3-point shot with five seconds left in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Wa-Hi coach Jack Mehn stated his pleasure with the maturity of his team afterward. He noted that it was a contrast to the previous meeting between the two teams three weeks ago in the Blue Devil gym – won by Hanford in double overtime.

I recall a line from a movie that suggested, ‘Training is useful, but there is not substitute for experience.’ As these young Blue Devils continue to gain experience and confidence, there appears to be no limit to what they can achieve before this season ends.
