It’s a gas, gas, gas
It’s amazing, but it seems like it was just a couple months ago we were paying more than 4 bucks a gallon for gas.
Oh, wait. It WAS just a couple months ago we were paying that much.
In fact, going back over my records, I was surprised to note the top price I paid last summer [...]
Making a list…
It’s here! It’s here!
Dave Barry’s annual gift guide is out! You can check it out here.
Now there may be other Christmas gift guide lists about, but they are wimpy, pale, watery-eyed, weak-kneed lists. Pretenders all of them.
Although Barry has stopped turning out columns on a regular basis, he thankfully has kept up his annual Christmas [...]
Last meal(s)
The death penalty packet we got during Thursday’s tour of the execution chamber was pretty chatty compared to the one we got in 2001. (Provided the words “chatty” and “death penalty packet” can go together.)
The cover was even brighter. This one is a nice fluorescent yellow while the old one was a flat institutional green.
Inside [...]
Countdown
Sorry I haven’t written in a while. I’ve been preoccupied with a very somber event which is coming up sooner than I would care to think.
The event is the execution of Darold Stenson at the Washington State Penitentiary. It’s going to happen shortly after midnight on the morning of Dec. 3, barring intervention by the [...]
Calling Crockett and Tubbs

“Schizophrenic Cross-Dresser Likely Hiding Out in Coconut Grove”

I’ll bet Sonny and Rico wouldn’t touch this one with a 10-foot pole…
Laugh or cry?
Well, should we laugh or cry about this one?
“Obama win jolts price of Black history memorabilia” the e-mail headline blared.
The accompanying news release ballyhooed how a recent auction by the source (“the largest autograph auctioneers in the world”) “demonstrated a dramatic resurgence of interest in African Americana—ranging from inspirational documents, letters and signed photos to [...]
Shred this ’shed thing, now
OK, we’ve got to nip this thing in the bud. Right now.
The thing is “viewshed.”
The word has been cropping up in regards to wind generators around Milton-Freewater. It should be abolished, extirpated, liquidated, exterminated, eradicated and every other “ated” I can think of.
I can understand people being upset because wind turbines might disturb pristine views [...]
Road trip!
So what are we going to call old U.S. Highway 12 when it gets turned over to the county?
This sparked a lively discussion. Since “Winery Loop” (or anything with “winery” in the name) is off the board, it opens up a host of possibilities.
My suggestion was “In Vino Veritas Way”, but it didn’t seem to [...]
Job security
This may be hard to believe, but Rick Eskil, our editorial page editor, reports today that he had three people call Tuesday morning to ask who was elected president.
He didn’t ask his callers how they managed to escape NOT knowing. It’s a little hard to imagine how somebody could have avoided hearing or seeing anything [...]
vile calumny
A colleague has one of those word-a-day calendars and “calumny” popped up a while ago. I’ve been waiting to use it and since it kind of fits with the election season, I thought I today is as good a day as any.
The late, and greatly-missed, Hunter S. Thompson could get away with using terms such [...]
