Root canal performed on lion
After being tranquilized, Zamba, a 700-pound male lion, undergoes dental surgery at Cat Tales Zoological Training Center, in Spokane.
The Spokesman-Review in Spokane reports that the 700 pound lion somehow broke of his two fangs sometimes this winter. Caretakers at Cat Tales Zoological Park, where the big guy resides, found the teeth while cleaning out his cage. They noticed his attitude suffered with the loss of his teeth and aren’t sure how it happened but they speculate that he may have broken them off while gnawing on an icy log. A Spokane-area doctor with a portable root canal surgery setup came to the rescue.
That must have been some tooth ache.
Baby Gorilla – Naming Contest
Mia Moja, a female gorilla who lives at the Louisville Zoo, holds her newborn daughter. The baby was born Feb. 6 but it has taken until now for zoo staff to identify the baby is female. The mama gorilla, who has raised one baby before, has been holding her new charge close. Sometimes zoo staff must step in to care for baby apes that are born in captivity because the mothers are unfamiliar with how to care for babies, but Mia Moja appears to be doing a fine job all on her own. The zoo is planning a contest to name the baby, the first gorilla born this year in the United States. (AP Photo/Louisville Zoo, Kara Bussabarger)
You can see more pictures of the baby gorilla and her mama and even a video by clicking here.
Details on the naming contest will be available later at the zoo’s website.
Orangutan – Up Close and Personal

Schubbi, an orangutan, reacts to the new Asia enclosure at the zoo in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Schubbi is leader of a group of seven apes who moved into their new home last week. After 10 years, the ‘close to nature’ Zoom Erlebniswelt is now completed. The reconstruction of the old zoo habitat into a modern one more appropriate for the species cost $125 million. Yes, skunks can be cute.

A western spotted skunk peeks out from between the rocks at the Bronx Zoo in New York. Normally native to western North America, this new arrival makes her home in the Bronx Zoo’s “Mouse House.”
Flying Fox
Flying foxes are actually bats. They are fruit bats and are the largest bats in the world. Their wings can span up to five feet. They in Indonesia. Like other bats, they navigate using echolocation. This one lives at the Singapore Zoo.

Working with Wolves

Although they are discouraged from standing, the two gray wolves Nicole Lee cares for sometimes do so in the excitement of her arrival. Having raised the wolf pack by hand since the animals arrived at the Red River Zoo in Fargo, N.D. two years ago, Lee is clearly welcome in wolf territory. But she is under no illusions about her potential place in the wolf pecking order. (AP Photo/The Forum, Michael Vosburg)

Trimming an Elephant’s Tusks
Senior Elephant Keeper Tara Bedrossian, right, and Keeper Eduardo Marero trim the tusks of adult male Asian elephant “Dalip” to avoid having them hit the ground when he walks and perhaps injuring himself. Approximately 12 inches from each tusk was removed with a hacksaw that had to be constantly cooled with streaming water. Dalip is 43 years old and weighs over 12,000 pounds.
